This farmer didn't think they had compaction, but as you can clearly see, they have the typical compaction issues most farmers face, illustrated in the image below. Right below their tillage practices, this 10" layer of soil compaction has been building for years. This layer of compaction restricts water absorption into the soil. As APSA-80 works into this layer of compacted soil, a 300 psi corn root tip works it's way through this compacted layer to chase the moisture that is now in that compacted layer. As the corn root pushes through this layer of compaction, it creates new pores in the soil and alleviates soil compaction.
APSA-80 functions as an activator for herbicides and other chemicals applied, increasing the effectiveness of post-emergent herbicides.
The Irrigation Research Foundation conducted 3 compelling studies which illustrate the effectiveness of APSA-80 on water.
The first showed a 44% increase of water infiltration into soil. Instead of your valuable rain water running off or evaporating, this helps 44% more water to get into the soil.
The second showed an increase in hydraulic conductivity by 17.2%. Hydraulic conductivity measures water's ability to leach into the soil. Studies have shown it takes 120% field moisture capacity, this means standing water, to penetrate a 2" compaction layer 8-10" deep. The 17% increase in hydraulic conductivity means it would only take 103% field moisture capacity to penetrate that same layer of compaction. If you have clay soils that hold water, APSA will help water penetrate that layer to get moisture deeper into the soil profile.
The third study showed a 70.5% increase in soil sorptivity, which measures the soil's ability to hold moisture in the moisture profile. This study is significant! If you have a leeching problem in sandy soil, APSA will help hold moisture in the soil profile.
Surface tension of a liquid(water) is the measure of cohesive properties of that liquid as it relates to the resistance of that liquid to evenly spread over a surface or diffuse into space. A Dyne is the unit of measurement for the surface tension of a liquid. Typical surface tension of water is about 72 dynes/cm2. After treatment with APSA-80, the surface tension is reduced to about 30 dynes/cm2, which allows water to penetrate deeper into the micropores of the soil, increasing the moisture holding capacity of the soil.
Will it work in your soil type?
Many farmers see the compelling yield results and wonder, "I can see APSA-80 works in other fields, but will it work in my type of soil?" This is an excellent question!
Think of putting all soil types on a spectrum, with sandy soil on one end of the spectrum, clay on the other, and everything else in between. If a farmer has sandy soil, they have a leeching problem with the moisture leeching past the root zone of your crops. If a farmer has clay soils, the soil has a tendency to pool water on top of the soil.
In sandy soil, APSA increases sorptivity by 70%, creating a water profile on each particle of sand and holds moisture and nutrients in the root zone for a longer period of time. In clay, APSA reduces the surface tension of water from 72 to 30 dynes, which allows water to better penetrate into the small fissures in the soil. When combined with a high psi root tip like corn, which will penetrate soils up to 300 psi, APSA-80 causes roots to move deeper into soil as it searches for the water which has penetrated deeper into the soil.
